The San Fernando Valley Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., in partnership with LA Opera and the LA Opera Ambassadors, will present “Opera Noir” on Feb. 28, an initiative designed to celebrate Black artistry and expand access to one of Los Angeles’ flagship cultural institutions.

Scheduled to coincide with the conclusion of Black History Month, the event centers on LA Opera’s opening night performance of Philip Glass’s “Akhnaten” at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The production stars countertenor John Holiday in the title role of the visionary Egyptian pharaoh who challenged religious orthodoxy to establish monotheistic worship.

“Opera Noir is about belonging and about creating space where culture, excellence, and community intersect,” representatives of the chapter stated per an official press release. “We are proud to partner with LA Opera to help build audiences, traditions, and pathways that reflect both the legacy and the future of this city.”

Attendees have been encouraged to wear colors representing their organizational affiliations—whether Divine Nine Greek-letter organizations, historically Black colleges and universities, The Links, or Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
