The Opera Next Door to Present ‘Così Fan Tutte’

By David Salazar

The Opera Next Door will present a unique production of “Così fan tutte” on May 22 and 23, 2021.

The Opera Next Door was founded by Colombian soprano Sasha Gutiérrez during the 2020 pandemic, presenting live concerts on stoops across Brooklyn. Now the company is taking its next step with its first full opera production.

The presentation of the famed Mozart opera will take place in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn and feature Cristina María Castro and Tiernan Chase as Despina with Sasha Gutiérrez and Shaina Martínez sharing the role of Fiordiligi. Meanwhile Ana Mora and Rosario Armas will take on Dorabella while Juan Hernandez and Héctor Camacho will perform as Ferrando. The two Guglielmos will be Eunsung Lee and Laureano Quant while José Maldonado and Sergio Martínez will share the role of Don Alfonso.

Alejandro Zuleta will conduct a production directed by Natalie Mack.

“The production will transport the story and the characters from 18th century Italy to 21st century Brooklyn. Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte’s interpretation of the once classic (and perhaps outdated) trope of ‘fiancée swapping’ will be reimagined with sights and characters familiar to everyday New Yorkers, an outrageous sense of drama that any viewer of telenovelas will recognize, and even a modern, tongue-in-cheek perspective of the gender dynamics at play,” said Gutiérrez in a press letter.
