The Opera Cowgirls Return to New York City

By Afton Wooten

The Opera Cowgirls return to New York City on May 8.

The all-woman, alt-country opera fusion band ensemble will give a review of their most popular songs, including folk arrangements of the famous arias “Mon Coeur” and “O Mio Babbino Caro,” the Bizet and Parton mashup “Country Carmen” and their original song “Pearlsnaps and Pearls.”

Mezzo-soprano and founder Caitlin McKechney and sopranos Sarah Beckham-Turner, Mila Henry, Maria Maxfield, and Jessica Sandidge make up the group. Along with their operatic abilities the Opera Cowgirls also perform on guitar, banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, egg shakers, tambourine, piano, and percussion instruments. Guest artists featured on this concert are mandolinist Joe Brent, tap dancer Brent McBeth, violinist Andie Tanning, and mezzo-soprano Laura Virella.

Individually, the Cowgirls are regularly heard at The Metropolitan Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Nashville Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Memphis, Opera on Tap, Opera Philadelphia, PROTOTYPE Festival, Sarasota Opera, St. Petersburg Opera, and at Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theater.

The concert is held at The Green Room 42 and starts at 7 p.m.
