The Metropolitan Opera to Open with ‘The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay’

The Metropolitan Opera is set to open its 2025-26 season with the company premiere of “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.”

The Met-commissioned opera is composed by Grammy Award–winning composer Mason Bates and written by librettist Gene Scheer. The work will premiere on Sept. 21 and run through Oct 11, 2025.

In a statement, Bates said, “This story resonates now more than ever: two young artists using their imaginative powers to challenge authority and change the world. As a composer who fell in love with opera while attending shows at The Met in college, I am so honored to bring this iconic American tale to life in the very same building. Gene Scheer, Bart Sher, and the extraordinary team have been a joy to work with.”

General Manager Peter Gelb added, “With autocracy on the rise, ‘Kavalier & Clay’ couldn’t be more timely. Mason’s epic of an opera, although set during World War II, should be an inspiration to those who wish to see present-day fascism defeated.”

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, The Met’s Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director, will conduct a cast that includes baritone Andrzej Filończyk in his Met debut as Joe Kavalier and tenor Miles Mykkanen as Sam Clay.

The cast also includes soprano Lauren Snouffer in her Met debut, mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce, baritone Edward Nelson, and bass-baritones Patrick Carfizzi and Craig Colclough.

Bartlett Sher will direct his ninth production for the Met and will include set pieces and cinematic projections designed by a returning team from 59 Studio.

The Sept. 21 and Oct. 2 performances of “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” will be broadcast live on the SiriusXM app, and a fall performance will be rebroadcast on Jan. 3.
