The Kitchen To Present Robert Ashley’s ‘Improvement’
By Francisco SalazarThe Kitchen is pleased to present the late composer Robert Ashley’s newly reconstructed 1985 opera “Improvement (Don Leaves Linda).”
The opera, which was written in 1985 and first performed in 1991, follows the adventures of its protagonist Linda, whose travels and romances can be interpreted as attempts at assimilation and cultural cross-pollination, with both success and rejection.
“Improvement” is set to be performed by Gelsey Bell, Brian McCorkle, Paul Pinto, Amirtha Kidambi, Dave Ruder and Aliza Simons, and will feature a light and stage design by David Moodey, and music direction and sound design by Tom Hamilton.
“Improvement” will be presented with the support of the Howard Gilman Foundation, The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, and Joseph and Joan Cullman Foundation for the Arts; and in part by public funds from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
Performances are slated for February 7 through 9 and February 12 through 16 at 8 p.m. at The Kitchen.
