The Ivor’s Composer Awards Celebrate 20 Years

By Afton Wooten

The Ivor’s Academy and sponsors PRS for Music and BBC Radio 3 are celebrating the 20th anniversary of presenting the Ivor’s Composers Award.

Previously known as the British Composer Awards, the Ivor’s Composer Award recognizes “excellence in contemporary classical, jazz and sound arts.” There have been more than 700 works by over 350 composers nominated and nearly 240 awards presented.

Notable recipients include the late Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Jocelyn Pook, James Dillon, Judith Bingham, and many other English artists.

This year’s categories will recognize new music that premiered to UK audiences between April 2021 and the end of March 2022 for small chamber, chamber ensemble, large ensemble, orchestral and choral settings, jazz, community and participation projects and sound arts. To be considered nomination must be submitted by Oct. 18.

This year’s awards ceremony will take place on Nov. 15 at the British Museum in London.
