The Dessoff Choirs to Present ‘Sojourner’

By David Salazar

The Dessoff Choirs is set to present Valerie Capers’ “Sojourner” on Feb. 24, 2024.

The showcase will feature mezzo-soprano Lucia Bradford, soprano Angela L. Owens, bass Martin Hargrove, and tenor Justin Bell.

“Sojourner,” which premiered in 1981, explores the life of Sojourner Truth, the freed slave, abolitionist, and women’s rights activist.

In addition to Capers’ work, which closes the program, audiences will hear works by William Croft, Purcell, and Gregorio Allegri.

“The juxtaposition of these Renaissance-era religious songs acts as a prelude to the oratorio which at many points illustrates Sojourner’s constant and devout faith,” noted Malcolm J. Merriweather who conducts the program.

The concert kicks off at 4 p.m. at the James Chapel Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
