The Crossing is to Celebrate Holidays with David Lang’s ‘poor hymnal’

By Francisco Salazar

The chamber choir The Crossing is set to present “The Crossing @ Christmas 2024.”

The three December performances will showcase David Lang’s “poor hymnal,” one of those rare pieces that seamlessly and quickly moves from its first performance to icon.

The work, which premiered in December 2023, will be performed at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on Dec. 21 and in two Philadelphia performances. The first will be on Dec. 20 at Saint Mark’s Church and the second on Dec. 22 at Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill.

The Crossing will also release a new recording of “poor hymnal” on Cantaloupe Records on Dec. 13. The work was recorded with the composer present at the time of its premiere last December at Articulate Studios in Bloomsbury, New Jersey.

“poor hymnal” was co-commissioned for The Crossing and Donald Nally by Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting, Jill and Loren Bough, and Peggy and Mark Curchack.
