The Crossing and Roots in the Sky to World Premiere David Lang’s ‘in nature’

By Logan Martell

On August 1, 2020, Warren Miller Performing Arts Center and Grammy Award-winning choir The Crossing will co-present the world premiere of David Lang’s “in nature,” being performed by the Montana-based choir Roots in the Sky, and conducted by Donal Nally.

The work blends live and recorded performance, with singers from The Crossing providing recorded vocals for members of Roots in the Sky to use when they perform live from the Warren Miller Performing Center, bridging a gap of over 2100 miles between the choirs. Lang’s text is described as a series of reflections on nature, intended to take new meaning in the light of the ongoing pandemic.

Formerly known as the Aoide Chamber Singers, Roots in the Sky has emerged as one of Montana’s leading chamber choirs since its founding in 2012 at Montana State University. The choir mainly focuses on 21st-century music and has performed at venues throughout the state.
