‘The Constitution,’ ‘Figaro 90210!’ Headline Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend

The assortment of works on offer this weekend features a look at the United State’s most important document, a classic Shakespeare tale, a classic Bernstein work, a unique zarzuela, and a  fascinating take on “The Greatest Opera of All Time.”

Figaro 90210! – Chautauqua Opera

Eric Einhorn directs this iconic adaptation of the famed opera. Jorge Parodi conducts a production that features Matthew Cossack, Lauren Yokabaskas, Jesús Vicente Murillo, and Laura León.  Performances are set for Friday and Sunday.

Roméo et Juliette – Cincinnati Opera

Matthew White and Nicole Cabell star in Gounod’s famed masterwork. Performances, which are set for Saturday and Sunday, will be conducted by Ramón Tebar and directed by Matthew Ozawa.

Candide – Des Moines Metro Opera

Soprano Deanna Breiwick stars in a production of Bernstein’s famed work. Jonathan Johnson is Candide, Kyle Albertson is Dr. Pangloss, and Jill Grove is the old lady. David Neely conducts a production directed by Michael Shell.

La Llorona – Opera Cultura

Hector Armienta’s opera based on the legend will get performances throughout the weekend. It stars Jessica Blau, Rodrigo Garcia, Alba Franco-Cancel, and Andrew Metzger, among others. Temirzhan Yerzhanov conducts.

The Constitution: A Secular Oratorio – Vertical Player Repertory

During these complex political times, it is especially unique to see a work that puts the Constitution front and center. This is an opportunity for audiences to familiarize themselves with a document that represents the soul of the U.S. Performances are set throughout the weekend.
