The Belfast Ensemble to Present ‘Dublin Jack’
By David SalazarThe Belfast Ensemble is set to present “Dublin Jack,” a new opera about gay sex worker Jack Saul.
The work is set to premiere at the Dublin Theatre Festival on Oct. 7, 2025 with subsequent showcases set for the Southbank Centre in London on Oct. 9 and the Outburst Queer Arts Festival in Dublin on Nov. 14, 2025.
The protagonist was a 19th century gay male sex worker who was involved in several queer scandals with the British government and aristocracy that led to numerous gay with hunts during that period.
“Jack Saul lived outrageously, defiantly, and on his own terms. His story is one that history has tried to erase – too queer, too loud, too complex. This opera is about resurrection: of a voice, a body, and a spirit. It’s opera as confrontation, opera as celebration, opera as rebellion,” said composer Conor Mitchell of The Belfast Ensemble per an official press release.
The cast will be announced at a later date.
