The Atlanta Opera to Present ‘Come as You Are’ Festival Featuring ‘Cabaret’ and the Atlanta Premiere of ‘As One’

The Atlanta Opera, which staged productions in a circus tent during the pandemic, will continue serving up opera in unexpected spaces with “The Come as Your Are” Festival to be held June 2-19, 2022, at the Historic Rail Park at Pullman Yard.

Built upon the company’s successful Discoveries Series, the Festival will feature two productions: the musical “Cabaret,” and the Atlanta premiere of Kaminsky/Campbell/Reed’s chamber opera “As One.”

Headlining “Cabaret” are Curt Olds as Emcee, Aja Goes as Sally Bowles, and Anthony Luciura as Herr Schultz. Carl W. Knobloch Jr. General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun directs the production and Francesco Milioto, music director of OPERA San Antonio and artistic advisor to the Florentine Opera in Milwaukee, conducts. Performances are set for June 2-19, 2022, with matinees on June 12, 19, and a special ‘”Cabaret” Evening’ performance with Jay Hunter Morris on June 18.

The Atlanta premiere of “As One” will star transgender baritone Lucia Lucas as Hanna Before and Blythe Gaissert as Hannah After. Stephanie Havey directs the production, with transgender conductor Alexandra Enyart on the podium. Performances are set for June 9 and 11, 2022.

“There’s a different kind of electricity between singers and audience when you are in an unexpected space. That is the essence of the Discoveries Series,” said Zvulun in a press statement. “Pullman Yards offers us not only a historic, raw space that would be ideal for “Cabaret’s” Kit Kat Club, but also provides us an opportunity to reach out to a community and a neighborhood we have never interacted with. We have made it our mission at The Atlanta Opera to truly be embedded in the fabric of this city, and our residence in Pullman Yards is another testament to that commitment.”

Fully half of the company’s new audience has come from Discoveries Series, according to the press release.
