Thai Composer Somtow Sucharitkul to Compose Opera Based on ‘World’s Worst Film’

Thai composer Somtow Sucharitkul will be creating an opera based on Ed Wood’s infamous “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” often considered the “world’s worst film.”

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the composer will release a suite from the opera in the fall of 2023 before a full premiere comes in 2024. The work, which is currently in its libretto stage, will be produced by Torsten Neumann, the director of the Oldenburg Film Festival.

“’Plan 9’ is, of course, celebrated as the worst picture ever made and a cultural icon,” Somtow told The Hollywood Reporter. “Movie buffs have all the lines memorized. I intend to compose the score in the spirit of Ed Wood — with utter seriousness and high moral intent, as befits the exalted subject matter about aliens saving humanity from itself — so timely in these, ah, times.”

Sucharitkul’s first opera was “Madana,” the first Western opera by a Thai composer; the work, which was composed in 2000, was in English. He followed that up with “Mae Naak” and “Ayohya,” “The Silent Prince,” and “Dan no Ura.” He also created recently premiered “Helena Citrónóva.”

Sucharitkul is the Artistic Director of Opera Siam and was also a music consultant on the motion picture “Tár.”
