On Nov. 17, the Teatro Real de Madrid will stream Handel’s “Theodora” on MyOpera Player.

The oratorio will be shown in a new production by Katie Mitchell, which originally premiered at the Royal Opera House and will star Julia Bullock, Iestyn Davies, Ed Lyon, Callum Thorpe, Thando Mjandana, and Joyce DiDonato. Ivor Bolton conducts the Coro y Orquesta Titulares del Teatro Real.

When the production premiered in 2022, OperaWire stated that “Katie Mitchell’s Imaginative Vision is Blessed with Luxury Casting.”

Regarding DiDonato, OperaWire’s Benjamin Poore said, “The standout moment of the entire evening, from a musical point of view, was her unaccompanied, searching cadenza in ‘Lord, to Thee each night and day:’ a moment of hair-raising intimacy and softness” and regarding Bullock, he said, “It was a performance of utmost sincerity and intensity.”

“Theodora” opens on Nov. 11 and runs through Nov. 23, 2024.
