Teatro Nacional de São Carlos to Present First Lisbon ‘Tannhäuser’ in Over 30 Years

By David Salazar

The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos will present a new production of Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” on April 23 and 25, 2026, at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.

Directed by Max Hoehn, the production draws inspiration from German graphic art and print culture of the early 20th century, placing Wagner’s psychodrama and religious parable in a dark dreamworld aesthetic. Hoehn previously directed “Der fliegende Holländer” for the same company in Lisbon in 2023.

The performances mark major role debuts for tenor Jonathan Stoughton in the title role, soprano Annemarie Kremer as Venus, and baritone André Baleiro as Wolfram. The cast also features Allison Oakes as Elisabeth and Wolfgang Rauch as the Landgraf. Graeme Jenkins conducts the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa and the Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, with dancers from the Companhia Nacional de Bailado.

The creative team includes set design by Darko Petrovic, costume design by Nuno Velez, animation by Amber Cooper Davies, choreography by Isabel Galriça, and lighting design by Wilma Moutinho.

This is the first staging of Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” in Lisbon in over 30 years. The production will present the Viennese version of the opera.
