By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro La Fenice is set to return to Piazza San Marco in Venice.

The opera company will present Orff’s “Carmina Burana” conducted by Fabio Luisi on July 9. The event is being realized in collaboration with il Comune di Venezia and sponsored by Intesa Sanpaolo.

The Orchestra and chorus of the Teatro La Fenice will be joined by soloists Regula Mühlemann, Michael Schade, and Markus Werba.

For audiences not in Venice, the concert will be televised on Rai 5.

The Teatro La Fenice has a history of performing at the Piazza including the 1928 staging of “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” and the 1972 dance show in 1972 entitled Piazza San Marco Event con la Merce Cunningham & Dance Company. Sting also performed on the Piazza with the Filarmonica della Fenice in 2011 and in September 2020 the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro La Fenice performed during the Pandemic.
