Teatro dell’Opera di Roma to Present Historic Production of Bernstein’s Mass

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro dell’opera di Roma is set to present Bernstein’s “Mass” in a production for the first time in Italy.

The masterwork will be performed at the Terme di Caracalla starting July 1 and subsequent performances are scheduled for July 3 and 5.

The new production will be directed by Damiano Michieletto, who was in charge of the 2020 Rigoletto at the “Circo Massimo.” Diego Matheuz conducts the work which had its world premiere at the Kennedy Center on Sept. 8, 1971, and later made its European premiere in 1973 in Vienna.

The production will mark the debut of Michieletto at the Caracalla and will also see the participation of the Corpo di Ballo of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, choreography by Sasha Riva and Simone Repele, and the Street People Chorus. The production will also see artists from the “Fabbrica” Young Artist Program and from the Scuola di Canto Corale del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Markus Werba is the celebrant.
