Teatro De La Zarzuela Names New Music Director

The Teatro de la Zarzuela has named Guillermo García Calvo its new music director, succeeding Óliver Díaz, who currently holds the position.

Calvo will take over the position on Jan. 1, 2020. Calvo made his debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in 2012 and has since conducted  such works as “Curro Vargas,” “La tempestad,” and “Katiuska.” This season he conducts Tomás Bretón’s “Farinelli.”

Calvo is currently the Music Director at the Opernhaus Chemnitz where he is scheduled to conduct “Fidelio,” Mefistofele,” The Ring Cycle and “Lohengrin.”

He has also conducted at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Opéra National de Paris, Ópera de Oviedo, Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía, Wiener Staatsoper, and New National Theatre in Tokyo.

Díaz’s stint as music director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela started in 2015. He is also the founding member and vice-president of the Spanish Association of Orchestra Conductors (AESDO).
