Teatro De La Maestranza Announces Changes To 2020-21 Season

The Teatro de la Maestranza has announced changes for its upcoming performances.

Per an official statement on the company’s website, the opera house was forced to adjust its schedule due to the temporary and exceptional measures decreed by the Government of the Junta de Andalucía for the containment of the novel coronavirus.

First up is the recital by soprano Mariola Cantarero and tenor Ismael Jordi, which will be in the repertoire on Feb. 13 at 12 p.m. CET.

Verdi’s opera “Un Ballo in Maschera” will be performed on Feb. 14 at 12 p.m. CET, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. CET, and Feb. 20 at 12 p.m. CET. The opera will star Ramón Vargas, Gabriele Viviani, Lianna Haroutounian, Olesya Petrova, Marina Monzó, Andrés Merino, Gianfranco Montresor, Luis López, and Moisés Molina. Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts the production by Gianmaria Aliverta.

A concert featuring Spanish-French singer-songwriter Sole Giménez, which was scheduled for Feb. 19, will be postponed until June 20, 2021.

Gluck’s opera “Le cinesi” will take the stage on Feb. 21 at 12 p.m. CET, and Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. CET. The opera will showcase Catalina Paz, Teresa Villena, Helena Resurreição, Julen Jiménez, Belén Quirós, and Alicia Naranjo. Rubén Fernández Aguirre conducts the production by Bárbara Lluch.

The Teatro de la Maestranza joins the list of major Spanish opera companies that have already been forced to make significant modifications to their repertoires due to the ongoing pandemic.  Spain is undergoing its third wave of COVID-19, which is pressuring the country’s health system.
