By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro Comunale di Bologna will make history by naming Oksana Lyniv as the first Female Music Director for an Italian Opera company.

The conductor will assume the new position in January 2022 for the next three years. She will conduct at least two operas and two concerts per season. Lyniv made her debut with the Orchestra del Comunale in March during a concert at the Sala Bibiena and later returned in May for a concert at the Auditorium Manzoni.

In 2022, Lyniv will conduct two operas and three symphonic concerts. During her first year as Music Director, the conductor will lead the first act of “Die Walküre” in concert and the symphonic poem “Tod und Verklärung.”

The Ukrainian conductor will also present the 2022 season on Oct. 20, 2021 during the company’s annual press conference.

Lyniv recently made history becoming the first woman to conduct at the Bayreuth Festival and has conducted at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Oper Graz, Theater an der Wien, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and Oper Frankfurt, among others.
