Teatro Colón Cancels Final ‘Gianni Schicchi’ Performance Due to World Cup 2022 Celebration

By David Salazar

The Teatro Colón has announced that the Dec. 20 performance of “Gianni Schicchi” has been canceled due to the government decreeing the day as a national holiday.

The company also canceled “The Nutcracker” performance at a different venue on that same day. The Teatro Colón will also suspend guided tours and ticket and subscription sales throughout the day.

The government decreed Dec. 20 as a National holiday in order to allow people to celebrate Argentina’s National Team’s following its triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Argentina won the final match against France on penalties in what was declared by many press outlets as the “Best World Cup Final Ever.”

The Dec. 20 performance was the last one in the run. “Gianni Schicchi” starred Gustavo Gibert, María Virgínia Savastano, Santiago Martínez, Marina Silva, Hernán Iturralde, and Iván García. The production was directed by Carlos Trunsky and conducted by Carlos Calleja.
