Teatro Cervantes de Málaga has announced that it will postpone its production of Verdi’s “Rigoletto” until the 2021-22 season. The original performances were scheduled for Feb. 26 & 28, 2021.

The opera was set to star Antonio Gandía in the role of Duca di Mantua, Sabina Puértolas as Gilda, Felipe Bou in the role of Sparafucile, Sandra Ferrández as Maddalena, and Juan Jesús Rodríguez in the title role.

Arturo Díez Boscovich was signed on to conduct Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga in the production by Francisco López.

The Teatro Cervantes de Málaga joins a list of major Spanish opera companies that have already been forced to make significant modifications to their 2020-21 seasons due to the ongoing pandemic. Spain is currently undergoing a severe third COVID-19 wave, with 28,565 new daily cases recorded on Feb. 5, 2021.
