The Teatro alla Scala has announced it is planning to reopen in September with Verdi’s Requiem.

Dominque Meyer and the administration announced the news stating that Riccardo Chailly would lead the famed work in memory of the victims of COVID-19. The concert would also be performed at later dates in Bergamo and Brescia, two of the hardest hit cities in the country.

The Teatro alla Scala closed in February due to the coronavirus pandemic and was forced to cancel a number of new productions including “Salome,” “Il Turco in Italia,” “Pelléas et Mélisande,” and “Tannhäuser.” With the announcement a number of summer productions will be canceled including “Fedora,” “Un Ball in Maschera,” and “La Traviata.”

Italy is one of the hardest hit countries in the world by the coronavirus. To date the country has reported 199,414 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 26,977 deaths. 66,624 have recovered from the disease. The country recently extended the lockdown until the end of May.
