Teatro alla Scala to Open 2023-24 Season with ‘Don Carlo’

The Teatro ala Scala has announced that it will open its 2023-24 season with a production of “Don Carlo.”

The news comes a few days after the legendary theater opened its 2022-23 season with “Boris Godunov” in the midst of protests. According to maestro Riccardo Chailly, the connection between “Boris Godunov” and “Don Carlo” was that Mussorgsky was listening to Verdi’s opera when he was writing his own.

“Godunov” had broken a streak of presenting operas by Italian composers on opening night; in 2021-22, the company showcase “Macbeth,” while the 2019-20 season opened with “Tosca.” Meanwhile, “Attila” opened the 2018-19 season. “Don Carlo” restores that streak.

No cast was announced for “Don Carlo” but Elīna Garanča previously mentioned in an interview that she will be opening the season.

“Don Carlo” opens on Dec. 7, 2023.
