Teatro alla Scala Extends Closure due to the Coronavirus

The Teatro alla Scala has announced that it will suspend performances until March 8, 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement, the company said, “in relation to the diffusion of the Coronavirus, the Prime Minister has decreed the suspension of any events and initiatives and of any meeting in public places, including cultural ones, until Sunday, March 8. In compliance with these provisions, all performances and events open to the public at La Scala until March 8 are cancelled.”

The Teatro alla Scala closed its theater last week as the virus spread across Northern Italy. It also announced that a chorus member for the theater had contracted the coronavirus and had asked all that had been in contact with the member to get tested for the virus.

According to reports the amount of confirmed cases in Italy have spiked from three to 1,128 with a death toll of 29.
