Director of Timothée Chalamet Classics to Helm Teatro alla Scala’s ‘Un Ballo in Maschera’ in 2027-28 Season

The Teatro alla Scala has confirmed that the 2026-27 season will open with Verdi’s “Otello.”

The production will be directed by Damiano Michieletto and will be conducted by Music Director Myung-Whun Chung.

The opera will open on Dec. 7, 2026.

The company also confirmed that the 2027-28 season will open with Verdi “Un ballo in maschera” under the direction of Chung. The new production will be directed by Luca Guadagnino, a filmmaker known for “Call me by your Name” and “Bones and All,” both starring Timothee Chalamet. He also helmed “Challengers,” starring Zendaya.

Further details will be announced at a later date.

The Teatro alla Scala next revives a production of “Turandot” and opens a new production of “Nabucco” with Anna Netrebko and Luca Salsi.
