Teatro alla Scala Announces First Coronavirus Case

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro alla Scala has announced that one of its chorus members has contracted the coronavirus.

In a press statement, the company said that after the Feb. 12, 2020 performance of “Il Trovatore,” the member stayed home on Feb. 13 due to illness. The member later tested positive for infection and according to the statement has already passed the acute phase of the virus. As a result, the theater has ordered that anyone in the company who had direct contact with the chorus member must be tested.

The Teatro alla Scala closed its doors earlier this week following orders from the ministry of health in order to stop the further spread of the virus in Italy. The theater announced that it will be closed until March 1, 2020.

Italy has suffered the largest outbreak of the virus outside of Asia with more than 650 cases and 17 deaths.
