By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro alla Scala has announced a cast change for its final three performances of Puccini’s “Turandot.”

The company said, “Due to illness, Roberto Alagna has to withdraw from the performance of “Turandot” on July 9, 12 and 15. The role of Calaf will be entrusted to Brian Jagde for the performances on July 9 and 12, and to Yusif Eyvazov for the performance on July 15.

Jagde recently performed the role with the Royal Opera House in Japan and has also performed it at the San Francisco Opera and the Paris Opera. Eyvazov opened the La Scala production earlier this month and has performed the role to great acclaim at the Arena di Verona and the Metropolitan Opera, among others.

They both join a cast that includes Anna Netrebko, Raúl Giménez, Rosa Feola, and Vitalij Kowaljow. Michele Gamba conducts the production by Davide Livermore.
