By David Salazar

The Teatre Mundial in La Bisbal d’Empordà, Spain is set to present “Alma” on Feb. 23, 2024.

The semi-staged recital will feature nine languages as well as the use of video to interact with the voice. Headlining the performance is mezzo-soprano Leonora Gaitanou. She is accompanied by pianist Konstantinos Papadakis.

“What is the common between opera/theatre and the soul journey,” questions the company’s official press announcement for the performance. “Roles in opera seen as incarnations of one soul, through different lifetimes. Different languages in opera, as the different languages a human soul can speak through her incarnations… A soul travel through different incarnations, where the soul ‘wears’ different costumes as bodies, plays different roles in her timeless journey and speaks different languages to express her emotions. Video accompanies her as a shadow in this journey, where voice interacts with the video for the first time in an operatic recital”

Gaitanou has performed throughout Europe in works by Mozart, Wagner, and Janácek, among others. She recently starred in and directed a production of “Bluebeard’s Castle” in Switzerland.
