Gran Teatre del Liceu Announces Cast Change for ‘Otello’

By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona has announced a cast change for its upcoming production of “Otello.”

The company announced that Gustavo Dudamel will replace conductor Riccardo Frizza at the podium.

The news comes a day after the company announced a series of changes to its 2020-21 season including a new production for “Otello.” The company will now present the Bayerische Staatsoper’s interpretation directed by Amélie Niermeyer instead of the Royal Opera House’s 2016-17 production by Keith Warner. The reason for the change was due to transportation issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Otello” will star Gregory Kunde,  Carlos Álvarez, and Krassimira Stoyanova in the first cast and Jorge de León, Željko Lucic, and Eleonora Buratto in the second cast.

“Otello” opens on March 27 and will run through April 14.
