Tanglewood 2019 Season To Feature Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, & A Wagner Opera In 2 Days

The Tanglewood Festival has announced its 2019 season. As with other programs of this sort, we will limit ourselves to the vocal and operatic selections on display. For the full program, click here.

Verdi’s Requiem will get a performance with Kristine Opolais, Oksana Volkova, Jonathan Tetelman, and Ryan Speedo Green. Andris Nelsons will conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Performance Date: Saturday, July 13, 2019

Renée Fleming will team with baritone Rod Gilfry, Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of Kevin Puts’ “The Brightness of Light.” The program will also feature Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

Performance Date: Saturday, July 20, 2019

Fleming is also set to appear in a performance of André Previn and Tom Stoppard’s “Penelope,” also a world premiere. She will perform alongside the Emerson String Quartet. The performance will also feature Barber’s first string quartet and Walker’s “Lyric for Strings.”

Performance Date: Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Over the course of three separate performances, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, under the baton of Nelsons, will perform the entirety of Wagner’s “Die Walküre.” Amber Wagner and Simon O’Neill appear as Siegmund and Sieglinde with Ain Anger as Hunding. Christine Goerke will take on Brünnhilde, while James Rutherford will be Wotan.

Performance Dates: Act one (July 27, 2019), Act two (July 28, 2019 – afternoon), Act three (July 28, 2019 – evening)

Baritone Thomas Hampson will perform from the American songbook alongside pianist Lara Downes in Song of America: Beyond Liberty.”

Performance Date: Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Joyce DiDonato and Antonio Pappano team up with the National Youth orchestra of the United States of America for Berlioz’s “Les Nuits d’été” and Strauss’ “An Alpine Symphony.”

Performance Date: Thursday, August 1, 2019

Finally, Mezzo Soprano J’Nai Bridges, tenor Nicholas Phan, soprano Nicole Cabell, and bass Morris Robinson will appear in a performance of Beethoven’s ninth symphony under the baton of Giancarlo Guerrero. Schoenberg’s “Friede auf Erden” will also be featured on the concert.
