Tamara Mumford, Nicholas Phan, Michelle DeYoung, Gerald Finley, Mary Elizabeth Williams Headline San Francisco Symphony’s 2023-24 Season

The San Francisco Symphony has announced its 2023-24 season.

For this article, our focus will be solely on vocal performances.

It all kicks off with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Soloists include Dashon Burton, Ben Bliss, and Tamara Mumford. The program also features Olly Wilson’s “Shango Memory.”

Performance Dates: Oct. 19 – 22, 2023

Daniel Harding leads the San Francisco Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and tenor Andrew Staples in performances of music by Vaughan Williams and Holst.

Performance Dates: Oct. 26 – 28, 2023

Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus in music by Terry Riley, Gabriella Smith, and Stravinsky.

Performance Dates: Nov. 17 & 18, 2023

Jonathan Cohen conducts a performance of Händel’s “Messiah” starring Nicholas Phan, Heidi Stober, Jennifer Johnson Cano, and Michael Sumuel.

Performance Dates: Dec. 8 & 9, 2023

Michael Tilson Thomas leads a performance featuring music by Mozart, Beethoven, Bruch, and Stravinsky. Among the vocal soloists are Sasha Cooke, Luca Pisaroni, and Nicholas Phan.

Performance Dates: Feb. 23 – 25, 2024

Esa-Pekka Salonen leads a performance of Bartók’s “Bluebeard’s Castle” starring Michelle DeYoung and Gerald Finley. The performance also features music by Scriabin.

Performance Dates: March 1 – 3, 2024 

There will be a special performance of “Carmina Burana.”

Performance Dates: March 23, 2024

Esa-Pekka Salonen leads a performance of music by Ravel and Schönberg. The showcase stars soprano Mary Elizabeth Williams.

Performance Dates: June 7 – 9, 2024

Mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor will solo in Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts.
