The Swiss Federal Council has decided to begin a gradual relaxation of its nationwide hard lockdown measures that were set to expire on Feb. 28, 2021.

In this initial step, which will start on March 1, non-essential shops, museums, libraries, zoos, and botanical gardens will be allowed to reopen. Depending on the epidemiological situation, the Council plans to continue with the gradual reopening on April 1, when the cultural and sporting events with public will be allowed to take place. Additionally, the federal government plans to allow restaurants with gardens and terraces to reopen at the same time.

However, as was strongly emphasized in the statement issued by the Swiss Federal Council, the epidemiological situation must further improve and allow for the plan to be executed in phases.

“More activities should be permitted progressively if infection rates are favorable, and as vaccination rates rise,” said the statement detailing the decision of the Swiss Federal Council.
