Susan Bickley Headlines Handel & Haydn Society’s ‘Dido & Aeneas’

The Handel and Haydn Society is set to perform Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas.”

The stage production will be directed by Aidan Lang, current general director of the Seattle Opera and future leader of the Welsh National Opera. Soprano Susan Bickley will perform the role of Dido, while baritone David McFerrin will take on the role of Aeneas.

The cast is rounded out by bass-baritone Matthew Brook as the Sorceress/Sailor, countertenor Reginald Mobley as the Spirit, soprano Sarah Yanovitch as Belinda, soprano Sonja DuToit Tengblad as the Second Woman, soprano Margot Rood as the First Witch and soprano Sarah Brailey as the Second Witch.

The program will also include several other Purcell works to round out the program including the Chaconne in G Minor. Other pieces on the program will be A New Irish Tune in G Major, “O solitude” performed by a single countertenor and cello, A New Scotch Tune in G Major, and “Welcome to all the pleasures.”

The performances are set to be shown on March 29 and 31, 2019 at NEC’s Jordan Hall in Boston.
