
Sumy National Theatre Pianist Olena Kohut Dies During Russian Missile Strike
By Francisco SalazarThe Sumy National Theatre has announced that pianist Olena Kohut, one of its orchestra members, was killed in April 13’s Russian missile strike.
Kohut was also a solo organist at the regional philharmonic, a member of the orchestra at the local theatre, and a lecturer at a professional arts college.
Kohut also performed abroad, playing the Ukrainian national anthem in historic European churches as a way to promote Ukrainian culture.
In a statement, the company said, “Olena was an extremely bright person, a true professional, a sympathetic colleague, and a reliable friend. Her music, her smile, her kindness — will forever be in our memories. We express our deepest condolences to family, loved ones, friends. Sharing your pain and sorrow. Bright memory and eternal respect.”
The pianist was one of 34 people who died from the Russian ballistic missiles during a busy Palm Sunday celebration. According to CNN, it is the deadliest attack of the conflict this year. Meanwhile, 117 people were wounded.
