The Paul Dresher Ensemble, OPERA America’s New Yorks Forum, Ensemble Ipse, and First Look Sonoma will present the New York premiere of “Both Eyes Open” on Jan. 13, 2023, at The Flea Theater.

The opera by Max Giteck Duykers and Philip Kan Gotanda explores the trauma of Japanese Americans during World War II and the path toward healing.

The opera is directed by Melissa Weaver and conducted by Benjamin Makino. Audiences will see a cast starring baritone Suchan Kim, soprano Zen Wu, and tenor John Duykers.

“Both Eyes Open” was developed between 2012-2022; the opera was workshopped with such organizations as Western Michigan University, University of Nevada Las Vegas, U.C. Berkeley, and the Paul Dresher Studios in Oakland, CA.

It had its world premiere at the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco in June 2022.
