Streetwise Opera Announces Fundraiser to Ensure Survival

By Francisco Salazar

Streetwise Opera has started a fundraising campaign to raise £120,000 to ensure its survival.

The company, which enables people who’ve experienced homelessness to find inspiration and empowerment through music, has raised £35,585 as of this writing.

Streetwise Opera has been running for 22 years and is the UK’s only opera company dedicated to working with homeless people.

The company offers individuals the tools and the motivation to rebuild their lives – to rediscover a sense of purpose and self-esteem through the life-changing power of creativity.

While the company has grown artistically and performed for over 10,000 people, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and earned nominations for the prestigious International Opera Awards and the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards, the environment is increasingly strained by reduced funding and rising costs. As a charity that relies primarily on grants from trusts and foundations, Streetwise Opera is especially exposed to the unprecedented pressure on the funding sector.
