Bradley Cooper & Carey Mulligan Featured in Bernstein Classic

As we get toward the end of Pride Month, the New York City Opera will premiere a major opera. But that doesn’t mean that there are not a number of other important works on display. Here is a rundown of our top picks for the operas to see this weekend (in alphabetical order by company).

Stonewall – New York City Opera

Iain Bell and Mark Campbell’s hotly anticipated “Stonewall” makes its world premiere on  Friday. The work, which stars Andrew Bidlack, Liz Bouk, Lisa Chavez, Michael Corvino, Joseph Charles Beutel, and Marc Heller, will be performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater. Carolyn Kuan conducts.

Shanawdithit – Opera On The Avalon

Dean Burry and Yvette Nolan’s work gets one performance on Friday at the St. John’s Arts & Culture Center. The opera will star Marion Newsman in the title role.

The Little Prince – NEMPAC Opera Project

Rachel Portman’s adaptation of the famed story will get performances on June 20th and 22nd at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. The work will star Christina English, Carley DeFranco, Jennifer Caraluzzi, Roselin Osser, Fran Daniel Laucerica, Ehimemen Omigie, and Clare Cho in the title role, among others. The work will be conducted by Dr. Tiffany Chang in a production by Alexandra Dietrich.

Candide – The Philadelphia Orchestra

On Friday and Saturday, audiences will get a chance to see Bernstein’s famed work featuring such singers as Alek Shrader, Erin Morley, and Denyce Graves. But the performances, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, will also feature Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan as narrators.

L’Ile de Merlin & Kaiser von Atlantis – Wolf Trap Opera Company

Wolf Trap Opera Company will showcase two unique works this weekend in a double bill. The operas by Gluck and Ullmann will feature Conor McDonald, Ben Edquist, Daniel Noyola, Shannon Jennings, Niri Liu, Megan Esther Grey, and Willford Kelly, among others.
