There will be a new Fricka in town when the Boston Symphony Orchestra takes on Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” at Tanglewood.

Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe is stepping in to replace Dame Sarah Connolly for the July 15, 2017, performance which will be conducted by Andris Nelsons. According to reports, Connolly is withdrawing due to illness.

The performance is slated to be a major highlight of the 2017 Tanglewood season as it is the festival’s first-ever complete concert performance of Wagner’s first installment of his four-part “Der Ring des Nibelungen.”

The cast for the July 15 performance also includes Thomas J. Mayer as Wotan, Kim Begley as Loge, David Cangelosi as Mime, Jochen Schmeckenbecher as Alberich, Morris Robinson as Fasolt, Ain Anger as Fafner, Malin Christensson as Freia, Jacqueline Echols as Woglinde, Catherine Martin as Wellgunde, Renée Tatum as Flosshilde, Patricia Bardon as Erda, David Butt Philip as Froh and Ryan McKinny as Donner.

Blythe is a world-renowned Fricka, having famously triumphed at the Metropolitan Opera in the role. She has also performed it at the Seattle Opera but has not taken on the role since 2013.
