State Opera South Australia to Present ‘Così fan tutte’

By Brian Tannenbaum

State Opera South Australia will present Mozart’s comic opera “Così fan tutte” at Her Majesty’s Theater in Adelaide, Australia for a four-performance season beginning this August.

A tale of love, loyalty, and deception, “Così fan tutte,” is the story of two sisters, Fiordiligi and Dorabella and their two suitors, best friends Guglielmo and Ferrando. Testing the loyalty of their partners, a gentleman’s wager is struck between the men who go on to disguise themselves in an attempt to seduce each other’s girlfriend.

The final opera in the Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy will be staged in a modern production set at an upscale Italian resort. Dane Lam, the artistic director of State Opera South Australia, is likening this season’s rendering to popular television programs “White Lotus” and “Love Island,” offering a familiar, contemporary take on the 18th century work.

“Whether you’re a seasoned opera lover or a curious newcomer to the art form, this production is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty and intricacy of Mozart’s music and the timeless themes it explores,” Lam said in an official press statement.

Soprano Sky Ingram will be portraying Fiordiligi and Mezzo Soprano Anna Dowsley will be playing her sister, Dorabella. Opposite the ladies are Baritone Nicholas Lester as Guglielmo and Tenor Kyle Stegall as Ferrando. Christopher Hillier portraying the old cynic Don Alfonso and Jessica Dean as the maid Despina round out the all-Australian cast.

Dane Lam will be conducting the State Opera Chorus who will be accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

The four performances are on Thursday August 29th at 7:30 p.m. local time, Saturday August 31st at 7:30 p.m. local time, Thursday September 5th at 7:30 p.m. local time, and Saturday, September 7th at 2:00 p.m. local time. TIckets start at A$35.

This production is a remount of a previous production by Opera Queensland in 2023.
