State Opera South Australia and West Australian Opera to Co-Present Verdi’s ‘Macbeth’

By Logan Martell

State Opera South Australia has announced that it will stage Verdi’s “Macbeth” this September.

This co-production with West Australian Opera will be directed by Stuart Maunder. Conductor Finnegan Downie Dear will make his Australian debut leading the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, a 40-member State Opera Chorus, and a cast comprised of Jose Carbo in the title role, Kate Ladner as Lady Macbeth, Pelham Andrews as Banquo, and Paul O’Neill as Macduff.

“No other composer can match the power, terror, and emotional pull of Verdi,” says director Stuart Maunder. “This 1847 version comes from a period where Verdi was at the height of his youthful powers. Big, bold and full of blood and thunder, our adaptation has stunning sets and lighting, with an all-star cast from across the globe.”

Performances will be held on Sept. 7, 9, 14, and 16, 2023, at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide.
