State Opera Australia to Present Gilbert & Sullivan Festival

State Opera Australia is set to host its first-ever Gilbert & Sullivan Festival.

The festival, which kicks off  on May 11, will feature performances of numerous works by the famed pair.

“It is incredibly exciting to see the opening of the new Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and its action-packed program of performances, conversations and laughs joining the rich tapestry of events and culture our city is known for. I know South Australians will join me in embracing this wonderful addition to our calendar of world-class cultural events,” said Hon Andrea Michaels MP in an official press statement.

It all kicks off with “Trial by Jury.”

Performance Dates: May 11 – 20, 2023

Next up is “The Pirates of Penzance” starring Ben Mingay, John Longmuir, Desiree Frahn, Douglas McNicol, and Antoinette Halloran. Anthony Hunt conducts the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Performance Dates: May 11 – 20, 2023

“H.M.S. Pinafore” will star Nicholas Jones, Jessica Dean, Jeremy Kleeman, Ben Mingay, and Antoinette Halloran. James Pratt conducts the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Performance Dates: May 12 – 20, 2023

The company will also present performances of “Mad Songs of Englishman.” Artistic Director Stuart Maunder and pianist Anne-Maree McDonald perform.

Performance Dates: May 14, 2023

St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir Director and Head of Music Anthony Hunt will present “Sacred Sullivan,” which features sacred hymns and music by Arthur Sullivan.

Performance Dates: May 14, 2023

“Sullivan in Love” will be a recital of love songs. Desiree Frahn and Jeremy Tatchell perform alongside St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir Director and Head of Music Anthony Hunt.

Performance Dates: May 19, 2023

Jeremy Tatchell, John Longmuir, Aidan Hodder, and Cherie Boogaart star in “The Sorcerer.”

Performance Dates: May 21, 2023

Jane Doyle will also host “Lads & Lasses Long Lunch.”
