
Staatstheater Cottbus Extends Music Director’s Contract
By Francisco SalazarAlexander Merzyn has extended his contract as GeneralMusic Director of Staatstheater Cottbus.
The conductor will now remain with the theater until the summer of 2028.
The Brandenburg Cultural Foundation Cottbus-Frankfurt (Oder) made the decision. As General Music Director, Merzyn is not only responsible for the musical direction of concerts and opera performances, but also for the artistic planning of the concert program and, as part of the management team.
Merzyn became Music Director in 2020. Pior to that he worked for the Lanstheater Coburg as Kappellmesiter and during the 2017-18 season moved to the Staatstheater Cottbus in the same position, where he was appointed acting General Music Director in the 2018-19 season. He has lead a number of works from Puccini, Verdi, Wagner, Mozart, and Beethoven, among others.
