Staatsoper Stuttgart to Open First New ‘Ring Cycle’ in Over 20 Years

By David Salazar

The Staatsoper Stuttgart is set to premiere its new production of Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” on Nov. 21, 2021.

The opera will be conducted by Cornelius Meister in a new production by Stephan Kimmig. Goran Juric will star as Wotan with Pawel Konik as Donner and Moritz Kallenberg as Froh. Other cast members include Rachael Wilson and Esther Dierkes as Fricka and Freia, respectively as well as Tamara Banjesevic, Ida Ränzlöv,  and Aytaj Shikhalizade as the Rhinemaidens. Rounding out the cast will be Leigh Melrose as Alberich.

This will represent the first Ring Cycle production at the company since the 1999-2000 season.

“The anti-capitalism in ‘Rheingold’ is evident, but merely lecturing from the stage with a raised forefinger is too simplistic – and most people know that. But what are the alternatives? Are there other possibilities for progression and development? These are the issues that arise from Wagner’s work and that today’s generation also has to face,” Kimmig said of his production in a press statement.

To celebrate the premiere, the company will also showcase an exhibition entitled “Winter-Bayreuth.”
