‘Spontini Days’ Takes Place as Part of the XXIV Pergolesi Spontini Festival
By Afton WootenThe XXIV Pergolesi Spontini Festival will honor the work and memory of composer Gaspare Spontini in “Spontini Days.”
In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth, “Spontini Days” will take place in his hometown of Maiolati Spontini, between July and Sept. Events will feature original and contemporary reinterpretations of the composer’s operas and arias performed by soprano Khatia Jikidze and tenors Wooseok Choi and Alessandro Fiocchetti, a dance showcase, a music-themed treasure hunt for children, a spiritual concert, and more.
As part of the autumn opera program at the Pergolesi Theatre, Spontini’s “La Vestale” and “I Quadri Parlanti” will be performed. Also on the program is “Rethinking Fernand Cortez,” which was specially commissioned by the Foundation to young composers from the “G. Rossini” in Pesaro.
The XXIV Pergolesi Spontini Festival will also celebrate Giovanni Battista Pergolesi with a world premiere of a newly discovered Symphony and five unpublished arias taken from the 1732 and 1734 versions of his opera “Lo frate ‘nnamorato.”
The festival runs July 21 through Sept. 18.
