Spoleto Festival USA to Present Free Digital Platform Starting May 22

By David Salazar

The Spoleto Festival USA has announced a free digital platform that begins streaming on May 22, 2020.

For the purposes of this article, our sole focus will be on operatic and vocal performances being showcased.

Arguably the most fascinating of offerings will be a preview for the upcoming opera “Omar” by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels. The work was one of the most anticipated of the 2020 festival and is now set for its premiere in 2021. The preview of the work will include a rehearsal with tenor Jamez McCorkle and Festival Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy. The rehearsal will be available between May 22-June 7, 2020.

Additionally, the festival will present weekday broadcasts of 11 past chamber music programs, a digital concert of Rzewski’s “Coming Together,” and several other concerts featuring such artists as Linda May Han Oh, Fabian Almazan, Pedja Muzijevic, and several others.

Check out all the performances here.
