The Isango Ensemble is set to showcase “Aesop’s Fables” at The New Victory Theater in New York on Nov. 1-3, 2019.

The opera, which is sung in English with a mix of Xhosa, Tswana and Zulu languages, is aimed at a younger audience and features music inspired by gospel and traditional African song.

The Isango Ensemble is based in Cape Town, South Africa and was formed by director Mark Dornford-May and music director and singer Pauline Malefane. The company’s production of “The Magic Flute” in 2014 won the Olivier Award for Best Music Revival.

“Isango Ensemble is different; it is unique, producing work of international standards, linking high art to the lives of its astonishing performers,” said Isango Ensemble Patron Sir Ian McKellen in a press release. “The future of Isango is important not just to its company members but to South Africa and to the world beyond.”
