Sonya Yoncheva’s ‘Otello’ & The Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend Internationally (4/19-21)

The holiday weekend is here and that means many companies are on hiatus. However, there are a number of festivals going on and a number of productions ending runs.

Here is a look at some new productions and festival performances we are excited about.

Mavra / Iolanta – Bayerische Staatsoper, Germany

The Munich opera house presents a new production of a double bill with works by Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. Anna El-Khashem, Noa Beinart, Natalia Kutateladze, and Freddie De Tommaso star in the Stravinsky work, while Mirjam Mesak interprets the title role in Tchaikovsky’s final opera. Boris Prýgl, Long Long, and Markus Suihkonen round out the cast. Alevtina Ioffe conducts.

Festtage Staatskapelle Berlin, Germany

Aida Garifullina headlines a gala concert alongside Daniel Barenboim. The program features works by Verdi from “I Vespri Sicilianni,” “La Traviata,” “Rigoletto,” and “Nabucco.” The concert will be showcased on Friday and Saturday.

Otello – Baden Baden Festival, Germany

Verdi’s “Otello” ends its run in a new production from Robert Wilson conducted by Zubin Mehta and the Berliner Philharmoniker. Sonya Yoncheva, Stuart Skelton, Francesco Demuro, and Vladimir Stoyanov star in the performance on April 19.

Madama Butterfly – Teatro San Carlo, Italy

Evgenia Muraveva and Rebeka Lokar share the title role of Puccini’s popular work. Saimir Pirgu and Angelo Villari alternate as Pinkerton, while Raffaella Lupinacci and Chiara Tirotta share the role of Suzuki. Giovanni Meoni and Filippo Polinelli round out the cast as Sharpless with Gabriele Ferro conducting.

The weekend will feature the final two performances of the season on Friday and Saturday.

The Merry Widow – Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Italy

Anthony Michaels-Moore, Adriana Ferfecka, Nadja Mchantaf, Paulo Szot, and Peter Sonn star in a new production of Damiano Michieletto. Constantin Trinks conducts the final performances on Friday and Saturday.
