Sonya Yoncheva To Participate In Academy Awards

By Francisco Salazar

Sonya Yoncheva is slated to attend the Academy Awards.

The soprano announced the news via social media stating, “I am delighted to share with you that I am invited to take part in the 91st Academy Awards.”

The news comes after the Academy announced that maestro Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic would be performing.

Yoncheva did not mention what she would be performing or what her role would be. More details are slated to appear as the date gets closer.

Yoncheva is the latest opera singer to be invited to the Oscars. Previously Sumi Jo was invited during the 2016 ceremony but her nominated song “A Simple Song” was cut from the ceremony. Last year Renée Fleming participated in two Oscar winning films including the Best Picture winner “The Shape of Water.”

The Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 24.
