Sonya Yoncheva, Plácido Domingo & Ermonela Jaho Highlight Teatro Real 2019-20 Season

The Teatro Real has announced its 2019-20 season featuring seven Teatro Real premieres and three Spanish premieres. Here is a look at what to expect.

The season opens with Verdi’s Don Carlo with Nicola Luisotti conducting a production by David McVicar. The opera returns after a 14 year absence with Francesco Meli, Andrea Carè, and Alfred Kim sharing the title role; Dmitry Belosselskiy, Michele Pertusi, and Dmitri Ulyanov as Filippo; Luca Salsi, Simone Piazzola, and Juan Jesús Rodríguez alternating as Posa; and Maria Agresta, Ainhoa Arteta, and Roberta Mantegna as Elisabetta. Ekaterina Semenchuk, Silvia Tro Santafé, and Ketevan Kemoklidze round out the cast as Eboli and  Mika Kares alternates with Rafel Siwek as the Grand Inquisitor.

Two casts highlight Donizetti’s L´Elisir dAmore” in a production by Damiano Michieletto. Stefano Montanari conducts the production which stars sopranos Brenda Rea and Sabina Puértolas,=; tenors Rame Lahaj, Francisco Gatell, and Javier Camarena; baritones Alessandro Luongo and Borja Quiza; and basses Erwin Schrott and Adrian Sempetrean. Adriana González rounds out the cast as Gianetta.

Performance Dates: Oct. 29- Nov. 12, 2019

Emio Sagi’s production of Bellini’s “Il Pirata” arrives in Madrid with Sonya Yoncheva, Javier Camarena, and George Petean highlighting the first cast. Maurizio Benini conducts the production. Yolanda Auyanet, Davinia Rodríguez, Celso Albelo, Dmitry Korchak, Simone Piazzola, and Vladimir Stoyanov also take on the lead roles.

Performance Dates: Nov. 30-Dec. 20, 2019

Ivor Bolton conducts Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte in Suzanne Andrade and Barrie Kosky’s production. Andrea Mastroni and Rafael Siwek alternate Sarastro, while Stanislas de Barbeyrac and Paul Appleby perform Tamino. The Queen of the Night will be performed by Sabine Devielhe and Rocío Pérez, while Annet Fritsch and Olga Peretyatko will alternate as Pamina.

Marcos Morau directs a new production of George Benjamin’s “Into the Little Hill” with Tim Murray conducting Jenny Daviet and Julia Riley. The opera is part of the Teatro del Canal festival.

Performance Dates: Feb. 11-15, 2020

Robert Carsen’s production of Wagner’s Die Walküre returns with Pablo Heras-Casado conducting. Stuart Skelton and Christopher Ventris sing the role of Siegmund, Günther Groissböck and Ain Anger as Hunding, while Tomasz Konieczny and James Rutherford take on the role of Wotan.

Adrianne Pieczonka and Elsabet Strid will alternate as Sieglinde while Ricarda Merbeth and Ingela Brimberg will take on Brünnhilde. Sarah Connolly and Daniela Sindram round out the cast as Fricka.

Steven Reich’s “Three Tales” will make its Teatro Real premiere with Nacho de Paz conducting with Norbert Ommer as the Sound operator. The opera is part of the Teatro del Canal festival.

Corselli’s “Achille in Sciro” gets a new production by Mariame Clement. Ivor Bolton conducts the production which stars Franco Fagioli and Jake Arditi in the title role, Andrea Mastroni and Grigory Shkarupa in Licomede, Tim Mead and Christopher Lowrey as Ulisse, Francesca Aspromonte and Francesca Lombardi Mazziiuli as Deidamia, Sabina Puértolas and Leonor Bonilla as Teagene, and Kenneth Tarver and David Alegret as Arcade.

Performance Dates: March 17-27, 2020

Simone Young conducts the Teatro Real premiere of Reiman’s “Lear” in a production by Calixto Bieito. Bo Skovhuys sings the title role alongside Susanne Elmark, Toben Jürgens, Andreas Scheinberg, Michael Colvin, José Antonio López, Kor-Jan Dusseljee, Ángeles Blancas, Ernst Alisch, Andreas Conrad, and Erika Sunnegardh.

Performance Dates: April 16-28, 2020

Willy Decker’s timeless production of Verdi’s La Traviata” makes its Teatro Real debut. Henrik Nánási and Nicola Luisotti conduct alternating casts with Nadine Sierra, Lisette Oropesa, Ekaterina Bakanova, and Lana Kos alternating the title role. Four tenors will sing the role of Alfredo including Michael Fabiano, Ivan Magrì, Matthew Polenzani, and Ismael Jordi, while Plácido Domingo, Artur Rucinski, Nicola Alaimo, and Luis Cansino will alternate as Germont.

Performance Dates: May 9-July 19, 2020

Ermonela Jaho sings the title role in a concert version of Mascagni’s “Iris.” Evelino Pidó conducts the concerts with a cast that also includes Leonardo Capalbo and Gabriele Viviani.

Performance Dates: May 18-22, 2020

Weinberg’s “The Passenger” makes its Spanish debut with David Afkham conducting a new production by David Pountney. Amanda Majeski, Leigh Melrose, Anna Gorbachyova, Lidia Vinyes-Curtis, Marta Fontanals-Simmons, Aigul Akhmetshina, Olivia Doray, Helen Field, Liuba Sokolva, Daveda Karanas, and Nikolai Schukoff star in the production.

Performance Dates: June 8-22, 2020

Concerts 

The season will also include concerts with Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov,  as well as Joyce DiDonato and Philippe Jaroussky.
